More than 260 people celebrated New Orleans style in the Akron Urban League’s “Night on Bourbon Street” Friday evening at its headquarters. The event introduced the agency’s new CEO, Fred Wright, and celebrated with a reception, program and auction. Planner Tara Regan said, “We focused on a fun theme because this a time to celebrate future possibilities.” Shirley Washington was event chair.“I’m from New Orleans so I like the music, the culture, the food and the people in my hometown city,” said Dr. Eric Johnson. “I always look forward to seeing everyone with smiles,” said greeter Tyana Hughley. Guests had a chance to have their caricature drawn by Kari Fry and have a tarot card reading from Laura Lyn. There were 35 auction items on display. James McCants, who said he was a big Buckeyes fan, planned to bid on any Ohio State items on the table. Abby Billups was hoping for the gift card tree. Kristin Hafford, Shannon Linton and Monica Woods helped register guests and distribute auction paddles.Event committee members were Marvin Boakye, Roxia Boykin, Michael Davis, Sharah Dragon, Barb Greene, Kim Lee, Sheri Myricks, Donna Sadler, Monica Woods, Fred Wright and Kimberly Young. The Mardi Gras theme was a part of each table, and Sekoya Kendrick passed out traditional masks. “I live in Houston so I’m not too far from New Orleans,” said Khynnedi Wright. Wright is the niece of the new CEO, who was joined by his wife, Judy Wright, and his brother Rodney “Pop” Wright as well as other family members who came for the celebration. Judy Wright said, “This is very exciting and it will be a new adventure for us.”
